Music Monday #5: Power Ballads

29 Oct

A couple of weeks ago, La La over at Tales of a Charm City Chick wrote a post about power ballads. This is a woman speaking my language because I absolutely love songs where the singer is practically begging you to pull out a lighter and wave it in the air like you just don’t care. I asked her if I could steal use her idea for a Music Monday post, and she graciously agreed.

I tried to make a Top 10 list which turned into a Top 25 list which turned into a Top 500 list. I never realized how many power ballads I liked until I started writing this post. It started becoming a bit like asking a parent to name his/her favorite child, and unless you’re lucky enough to have a child like me, you just can’t do it.

So I’ve decided to take a different approach. I thought I’d pick a few power ballads that had a little more meaning to me, and share the stories behind the songs. Continue reading

Music Monday #4: 90’s

7 May

The 90’s was such a glorious decade. My youngest sister was born in the 90’s. I started junior high and became a social leper in the 90’s. I came home past curfew and got into trouble with my parents in the 90’s. I went through a phase where I wore pirate-y outfits and had a lesbian haircut in the 90’s. I was a ridiculously moody teenager for a better part of the 90’s.

“So Jen, it’s really great that you love the 90’s, and that you enjoy looking like a pirate, but can you get to the point of this Music Monday post already?”

You guys are so impatient.

Something else that really stood out about that decade was the music. If the names Babyface, TLC, Janet Jackson or Boyz II Men mean anything to you, you’ll want to keep reading. If not, you better educate yourself.  No, I’m not kidding. Go to a library and read a book or something.

Music Monday #3: Marina and the Diamonds

16 Apr

This edition of Music Monday post is going to be a little different from the previous ones I posted. In those, I outlined a list of songs I had listened to while getting my blogging on. This week, I want to highlight an artist whose altar I am worshiping at hardcore right now. Move over fellas, I’ve got a new lady in my life, and her name is Marina.

I had heard of Marina and the Diamonds from reading trashy online gossip sites (don’t you dare judge me) but had never actually listened to her music until a few weeks ago. It was late at night, and I was surfing YouTube and clicking on the suggested videos that appear on the right side, and landed on one of her songs. Hearing her music for the first time was like….a million little rockets going off in my head.

Music Monday #2: Playlist

I’m baaaaaaaaack!

As some of you may have noticed, I’ve been absent from the wonderful world of blogging for a couple of weeks now. I got sick with one of those illnesses that makes you feel like you’ve been hit by a bus, and then persists so long you wish you’d get by a bus. I haven’t been that sick in years, and was convinced I was infected with some crazy disease doctors would eventually call “Tonicosis” after I died from it. I’m happy to report that I’m still very much alive!

It’s Monday which means it’s time for my second installment of (cue dramatic music) MUSIC MONDAY! I know I haven’t written anything for this blog since my last Music Monday, but I did write a piece over at Expats Post since that time. That counts, right?

Music Monday #1: Playlist

One of the great things about being surround by amazing bloggers is that I’m often inspired by them. Lauren from Viciously Sweet makes some pretty rockin’ doodles, and I did my best to make her proud in my last post. Recently I had a light bulb moment thanks to Ruthie over at Just Rambling. She put up a post outlining a few random things about herself one of which was that she listens to music 39 hours a day. Her love of music is so strong that she defies time!

It got me thinking as to how important music really is to me. From hip hop to oldies to classic rock to 80’s to Top 40, I love it all. It makes my morning and evening commutes bearable, fuels all of my workouts, has gotten me through breakups, and travels with me on road trips. I’ve also found that I cannot be without it when I write. Something about the melodies dancing in my ears gets my brain revved up and ready for the writing process.

I thought it would be fun to share “the songs behind the posts” from the past week. To save you from having to dig through dozens of songs, I narrowed down my list to the tracks I found myself coming back to over and over again.

Here are my Top 10 songs from the past week:

Ellie Goulding- Lights

Jason Derulo- Breathing

Kimbra- Cameo Lover

Goapele- Play

Melanie Fiona- Monday Morning

Rihanna- Talk That Talk

Lana Del Rey- Born to Die

LCD Soundsystem- I Can Change

Chromeo- Fancy Footwork

David Guetta ft. Nicki Minaj- Turn Me On

Which songs were on your playlist last week?
