Music Monday #3: Marina and the Diamonds

16 Apr

This edition of Music Monday post is going to be a little different from the previous ones I posted. In those, I outlined a list of songs I had listened to while getting my blogging on. This week, I want to highlight an artist whose altar I am worshiping at hardcore right now. Move over fellas, I’ve got a new lady in my life, and her name is Marina.

I had heard of Marina and the Diamonds from reading trashy online gossip sites (don’t you dare judge me) but had never actually listened to her music until a few weeks ago. It was late at night, and I was surfing YouTube and clicking on the suggested videos that appear on the right side, and landed on one of her songs. Hearing her music for the first time was like….a million little rockets going off in my head.

Have you ever listened to an artist or band and felt that their anthology was written for you? I’ve had that only a handful of times in my life:

  • Fleetwood Mac (My Main Squeeze)
  • Three Dog Night
  • Aimee Mann
  • The Bravery
  • Sia
  • James Taylor
  • Bon Iver

And now, Marina and the Diamonds. I’ve got a girl crush on her in the biggest way, and I think she’s incredibly beautiful and badass and talented. Here are the songs of hers I’m loving the most right now:

What about you guys, do you have any artists whose bodies of work make your little hearts ridiculously happy?

Wow Jen and Tonic- I’m not sure if that’s how I refer to you or not-, you have quite a catch there! I found you through Sweet Mother, just looking through the comments, so I have her to initially thank for writing an amazing blog, but I stumbled upon your blog, and music always catches my eye, since I am a music journalist in the making (we hope).
You seemed so thrilled with Marina that I went straight to YouTube, and man was I hooked. Trying to do my homework, I was like: “Just one more song then I’ll get to that World History homework.” It didn’t happen.
But thank you, it’s always amazing to find great musicians, and she inspired me from the first song!

Thanks for stopping by! Yes, you may call me J&T 😉

I’m so glad you liked Marina & the Diamonds! This has been my most well-received Music Monday post so far, and I think that says a lot about her music. It’s so universal. Have you listened to the track “Starring Role” yet? I heard it *after* posted this, and it is KILLER. My favorite of hers so far.

Oh I love new recommendations and all that. Yep. High five. I’ll check her out for sure.
I love “sleeping at last”. It love his songs, of course… but I also love the band name the guy chose. Anything that reminds me of sleep is just great. It doesn’t matter what. Sleep.

I almost didn’t respond to this comment because I fell asleep 😉

      ENTHUSIASM!!!!

I hope you like Marina and the Diamonds, or even my other loves I mentioned.

I rocked a beer and For Emma, Forever Ago quite a bit last summer while I sat on my back porch. One of the few albums I can listen to without out hitting skip. It’s something special.

    • Jen and Tonic 04/18/2012 at 11:32 am #

That sounds like the perfect way to spend an afternoon. I agree that it is rare to find an album you could listen to all the way through…over and over again.

I have never heard of this girl before… but seriously I think her music is ADDICTING!
I have always found that a few artists always know how I feel:
    -Alanis Morissette
    -Phil Collins
    -No Doubt
    -Fleetwood Mac
    -Foo Fighters

When I’m alone in my car… I listen to the greatest hits of Lisa Loeb and Sondre Lerche constantly!

    • Jen and Tonic 04/16/2012 at 8:41 pm #

Addicting is right! Such a catchy sound, and all her songs vary which you don’t get with many other artists. They have 100 different versions of the same song.

Oh man, Phil Collins is another great choice! And Lisa Loeb was the soundtrack of my college days.

Wow, Jen, Aimee Mann, Sia and Stevie! Gotta say these are all on my iPod and I love anything they do. Love this Monday series!

    • Jen and Tonic 04/16/2012 at 8:39 pm #

Ah, you’ve got diverse taste like I do! I love all the links you always post on FB. I bet we could switch iPods and be perfectly content with the other’s music selections 🙂

ok, i love her and i’m going to make sure wifesy hears this. wifesy is a music freak. and a fleetwood junkie since childhood. we have handpainted mugs in this house with stevie lyrics on them. i’m not kidding!!!! and i love sia… i remember hearing them for the first time during the ‘six feet under’ finale and i was like, ‘who’s that, who’s that, i must find out who that is….’ great post j and t. xo, sm

    • Jen and Tonic 04/16/2012 at 10:59 am #

Where would one procure such wonderfully handpainted mugs? I don’t have to go to one of those crappy music festivals to get one, do I? I might do it for Stevie. After all, she is my original baby mama.

      • sweetmother 04/16/2012 at 11:00 am #

her and her high school bff f’en made them!!!! in some kind of crazy pottery class and wifesy is so not that type, but i find it hilarious. and i have coffee out of it everyday. wifesy is a huge stevie fan. honestly, i think she wanted to be her at one point… lol.

        • Jen and Tonic 04/16/2012 at 11:27 am #

I wanted to be Stevie too! It’s why I started wearing long flowy skirts and cowboy hats with studs on them. It wasn’t until someone told me I looked like a confused gypsy that I stopped.

          • sweetmother 04/16/2012 at 11:33 am #

loooooool, we’ve all looked like a ‘confused gypsy’ once or twice. i like to yell in a cathartic manner on stage, it’s funny, i promise and my friend was like, “my favorite thing about you is that when you’re yelling, you’re always wearing some kind of a flowy peasant blouse…it’s a nice contrast.” i thought that summed me up perfectly. lol.

          • Jen and Tonic 04/16/2012 at 11:38 am #

Oh man, I’m getting that image of of the Seinfeld episode where he wears that billowy white shirt. You must look like a pirate with Tourette’s on stage! Now I NEED to go to one of your shows.

Had to listen to some Aimee Mann after I saw her name…Momentum, in particular 🙂

    • Jen and Tonic 04/16/2012 at 8:43 am #

YES! That song is only second to “Save Me” for me.

    Jen,
Because you want to marry my wife I’ll listen to the songs you’ve posted. Ok… You also mentioned Bon Iver, who’s my biological father… So is Kevin Drew… And Wayne Coyne… And Matt Berninger… And Will Sheff…

Wow, you’ve got some seriously awesome genes at play there. No wonder you’ve earned the (self-appointed) title of Le Magnificent Clown. Well, that and your junk in the trunk.

You know I love music – almost as much as movies. Lately, or really for the last 6 months, I listen to A Perfect Circle. It’s the leader of Tool and some other fellows – a softer sound than Tool. I can’t stop listening to them. Even have a Pandora A Perfect Circle station.
I also adore the Avett Brothers and ANYTHING by Jack White.
There is one song Nina Kinert’s Hymn for You to Sing – listen to this NOW – Awesome!!

    • Jen and Tonic 04/16/2012 at 8:49 am #

I didn’t think I had ever heard anything by A Perfect Circle, but I just popped over to YouTube and recognize several of their songs. I imagined you rocking out to their songs and giggled 🙂

I love The Avett Brothers! “All My Mistakes” is such a great song.

    • Radium Rollercoaster 04/24/2012 at 9:24 am #

I love A Perfect Circle, it’s got an amazing sound, familiar to Tool but definitely alot easier to get used to. As far as Jen and Tonic’s reply, the same thing happened to me! My Dad used to listen to Tool constantly, so when I realized that A Perfect Circle was the same singer, we realized we knew a bunch of their stuff too!
