One of the great things about being surround by amazing bloggers is that I’m often inspired by them. Lauren from Viciously Sweet makes some pretty rockin’ doodles, and I did my best to make her proud in my last post. Recently I had a light bulb moment thanks to Ruthie over at Just Rambling. She put up a post outlining a few random things about herself one of which was that she listens to music 39 hours a day. Her love of music is so strong that she defies time!
It got me thinking as to how important music really is to me. From hip hop to oldies to classic rock to 80’s to Top 40, I love it all. It makes my morning and evening commutes bearable, fuels all of my workouts, has gotten me through breakups, and travels with me on road trips. I’ve also found that I cannot be without it when I write. Something about the melodies dancing in my ears gets my brain revved up and ready for the writing process.
I thought it would be fun to share “the songs behind the posts” from the past week. To save you from having to dig through dozens of songs, I narrowed down my list to the tracks I found myself coming back to over and over again.
Here are my Top 10 songs from the past week:
Ellie Goulding- Lights
Jason Derulo- Breathing
Kimbra- Cameo Lover
Goapele- Play
Melanie Fiona- Monday Morning
Rihanna- Talk That Talk
Lana Del Rey- Born to Die
LCD Soundsystem- I Can Change
Chromeo- Fancy Footwork
David Guetta ft. Nicki Minaj- Turn Me On
Which songs were on your playlist last week?
Wow! That’s quite a playlist you’ve got going. My recent favorite? I’m Elmo and I Know It. Don’t laugh, it’s a really adorable and rockin’ collaboration with LMFAO. My kids think I’m nuts but, what can I say, they are right. 🙂
HA! There are a few Kidz Bop songs I like (did I just say that out loud?) I watched the video for this song on YouTube. I didn’t care for the song, but I LOVED the dance moves from 1:10-1:20.
I’m sure you’ve heard of the song by Gotye with Kimbra in it—I went through a spell about a month.5 ago when I couldn’t stop singing it, much to the annoyance of my family and friends. It’s a very loud song.
“Somebody That I Used to Know” is such a great song! It is TOTALLY catchy, and I still find myself randomly singing it.
When will this music barrage ever end??? Sorry but I had to send these last two to you. Just because you said you like hip hop and my other girls aren’t really into it. So I’m sharing it with you. Plus…they’re Australian so you might not have heard of them.
Hilltop Hoods – I Love It
Drapht – Repunzel
Barrage me all you want! Those are great recommendations. Thanks TWIN 🙂
Two whole albums to make you fall in love and crave their sweet harmonies.
Florence and the Machine – Ceremonials. One of my favs from that album… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGH-4jQZRcc&ob=av2e
Feist – Metals. One of my favs from this album…
And maybe just a bit of classic Mac…Fleetwood that is.
You and I seriously were separated at birth! I love ALL of these selections, and Fleetwood Mac is my favorite band of all time.
GET OUT!!! Actually I would expect nothing less from you. You have impecible taste!
What is it with music that it can completely change the way we view life? Its a sweet magic I tell you. I only wish I had a musical bone in my body. I don’t.
Oh and just one more because I just listened to it and its freakin’ awesome. Cornflake Girl – Tori Amos.
AH! I just heard that song for the first time in a long time on the radio today. And I seriously thought, “Why don’t they play this song more? It’s so awesome!!”
I think it’s awesome that you’re so profoundly inspired by music. I am too, especially when I exercise. Nothing gets my Kegel exercises going like Weird Al Yankovic.
I never thought about doing my Kegels to music, but why not? I see a fitness video in your future! “Sweatin’ to the Kegels”…

Thank you 😀
Awesome musical post! I have to say right now I’m in love with:
Wolf Gang “The King and All of his Men”
Atlas Genius “Trojans”
She & HIm “Bring it on home to me”
And Matthew Wilder “Break My Stride” seriously see this performance… it’s magical: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28KobNbbI2s
Why did we ever stop wearing green and gold spandex? I love it.
I don’t know, but this guy is trying his hardest to bring it back: http://spandyandy.com/
Well…he looks happy enough doesn’t he? LOL. Maybe there is some unknown pleasurable experience wearing that much spandex. Maybe I’ll try it this weekend. 🙂
I had never heard of Wolf Gang or Atlas Genius. I really enjoyed those songs!
Also, I’m not quite sure how I lived my life without having seen that Matthew Wilder video. I loved that song before, and now I REALLY love it.
I feel like that video should be considered a national treasure.. in all nations!
Ooohhh, I love to talk about music! So this is the part where I recommend some bands, right? Yep! 😛
Here’s one oldie… I am SURE TJLubrano will laugh her butt off when she hears this one (I don’t seriously recommend the song, I just think it’s a sad and fun oldie):
EVERYONE loved this song back in the day…but it is sooo sad. The chorus says ‘I am here. Where are you?’ LOL, don’t you like that chorus?
Onto the better songs…
Just so you know, she’s not singing about a girl. 😉 I don’t like her golden teeth. They scare me.
And now one of my favorites…seriously… I LOVE LOVE LOOOOOVE this song:
Krezip is a very good Dutch band…
Anouk sort of reminds me of Tracy Chapman, I’m not sure if you’ve heard of her. I LOVE the song by Krezip. I also really liked “Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime” and “All My Life.”
Totes! 😉
I’m also curious as to know what you think of this song…it’s sung in both Dutch AND English because it’s with Counting Crows:
I like it! I don’t mind songs in languages I can’t speak. It’s mostly about the beat 🙂
What an awesome topic and one I could wax lyrical on over several pages, but I’ll spare you all that since you’re a valued friend 😉 I’ve been a die hard Iron Maiden fan since I was 13, and a pretty conistent metal-head since then too. But as I’ve got older and slowed down a bit, I’ve really got into Joy Division and Gypsy Jazz (Django Reinhardt) and bits and pieces of classical/baroque. I couldn’t live in a world without music- it’s probably the one true medium for self-expression- or at least the only one that I’ve found for myself. I just love it so much!
I actually knew you were an Iron Maiden fan! We must have talked about it at some point 🙂
I really enjoy Joy Division as well. I just checked out a Django Reinhardt video on YouTube and…WOW. What talent!
“…it’s probably the one true medium for self-expression…” It definitely is a form of self-expression!
Wow, Jen, you rock! I loved the video. 🙂 Anyone who is the slightest bit hip (note lack of hipster here) has music that defines them. You are “the wave,” full of power and dynamic force. You go, girl!
Argh. That video is actually an advertisement WordPress puts on there since I host through them. I need to upgrade to the ad-free version. I’m glad you liked it though 😉
Full of power and dynamic force….I like that! Let’s all “ride the wave” together.
I loooooove music! Let’s see this week I listened to Birdy’s songs Shelter, People help the People & The District Sleeps Alone Tonight….I just love her songs. The song Heaven from Emeli Sande was on repeat several days in a row. Next to that, soundtracks of Movies, Disney, Pixar and Anime are mixed on my MP3 player. I don’t have specific songs in my head now, some are in japanese, so I would have to look them up haha.
Birdy!!! You know how much I love her. I also really like Emeli Sande too, but it’s hard to find good quality videos since many on YouTube aren’t available here in the US. “Next to Me” is a song of hers I really like.
It doesn’t surprise me in the least bit that you listen to animated movies’ soundtracks 😉
